Heavy Traffic Dust Control

Heavy traffic areas can be detrimental to surrounding environmental health. As a foreman, it’s imperative actions are taking to limit the damage your footprint may be causing. Due to the sheer number of vehicles passing through a given work/construction area each day, soil erosion and dust accumulation can be severe. It’s time to take control…

  • Did you know that the EPA considers track-out, which is simply the mud and soil on the tires of farm equipment and other vehicles dropping off onto paved public roads, as one of agriculture’s and construction’s biggest violations? If you didn’t know, now you know… It’s a huge, ongoing issue. (source: US Environmental Protection Agency – www.epa.gov/national-menu-best-management-practices-bmps-stormwater-documents)

Heavy traffic areas pose a serious concern. Due to the sheer number of vehicles passing through these areas each day, soil erosion and dust accumulation can be severe. In certain environments, such as mining, this can even lead to an unsafe level of airborne contaminants such as:

    • PM10 (particulate matter with a diameter less than 10 microns)
    • Heavy metals
    • PAHs bound to particulate matter
    • VOCs(volatile organic compounds)
    • Asbestos
    • Gases such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen oxides

To minimize these risks, Global Environmental Solutions offers a variety of products such as our DustLess® organic fluid and DirtGlue® Industrial polymer specifically engineered to bond soil and dust particles together to reduce environmental impact from airborne particulate.

Some heavy traffic areas to consider are:

    • Large construction sites
    • Mining operations
    • Quarries
    • Sporting arenas
    • Entrances to parks and recreation areas
    • Popular campgrounds
    • Unpaved roads
    • Animal sanctuaries

Another point to consider is this: a traditional (although highly ineffective) solution to dust control in high traffic areas has been the use of large quantities of water, generally sprayed onto the travel surface multiple times a day in an attempt to mitigate airborne contaminants by soaking the surface. This method has three primary flaws:

First, as soon as the water evaporates, the particles can once again become airborne. In hot, arid climates, this can happen in under an hour.

Secondly, when the travel surface is wet, erosion is exacerbated, as is “track-out” whereby the wet dirt adheres to the tires of the vehicles passing through and gets tracked-out of the area and deposited on surrounding roads.

Third, the use of thousands of gallons a water a day for spraying is not an environmentally responsible decision.

Global Environmental Solutions’ products eliminate the need for repetitive watering, sparing this precious resource while far exceeding performance. If you are tasked with managing a heavy traffic area, let our leading-edge soil stabilization products ensure the safety of you and everyone else that works or visits the area.
