  • Control Contaminant Laden Dust
  • Control Contaminant Laden Dust Before it Takes Controls

Let’s start by stating the obvious…

Dust is everywhere. You’ve seen it when it hits the light just right (and also in varying sheet thicknesses on the bookshelf)… It’s literally everywhere. No matter how often you run the vacuum or break out the feather duster, you’ll never get it all. But, good on you for trying.

With that in mind, dust is a respiratory irritant and it is an ideal vehicle for various pollutants and contaminants. All health organizations will tell you that it is a known fact that inhaled dust particles smaller than ten microns will become a permanent fixture in your lungs, and, at that size or smaller can never be expelled. So, don’t think of dust as a nuisance, realize that dust is a true health hazard. As we agitate the environment around us, directly or indirectly, dust gets stirred up, and then it, contaminants, and pollutants enter the air we breathe. Thus, we’re at risk of being negatively affected by it’s inevitable existence.

How do contaminants get into the air?

Well, on a vast scale, there are a number of ways.

    • Construction sites
    • Unpaved roads
    • Fires
    • Environmental agitation (wind, storms, etc.)
    • Gravel parking lots
    • Mining sites
    • Quarries
    • Landing sites
    • Sporting arenas
    • Animal habitats
    • And more…

    Why should I care?

Good question. By and large, if you’re in and around areas that fall into any of the above categories, your physical health, and the health of the environment around you very much in jeopardy.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), “…particles that are 10 micrometers (µm) in diameter or smaller pose the greatest problems. These smaller particles generally pass through the nose and throat and enter the lungs. Once inhaled, these particles can affect the lungs and heart and cause serious health effects in individuals at greatest risk, such as people with heart or lung disease, people with diabetes, older adults and children (up to 18 years of age). Larger particles (> 10 µm) are generally of less concern because they usually do not enter the lungs, although they can still irritate the eyes, nose, and throat…”

To continue, particles of concern can be grouped into two main categories:

    • Coarse particles (also known as PM10-2.5): particles with diameters generally larger than 2.5 µm and smaller than, or equal to, 10 µm in diameter.
    • Fine particles (also known as PM2.5): particles generally 2.5 µm in diameter or smaller.

Dust can contain materials such as:

    • Heavy metals
    • Silica
    • Asbestos
    • Mold
    • Bacteria
    • Pollen

Not fun. Exposure to dust containing the aforementioned entities can lead to respiratory problems, even allergic reactions, unstable surfaces, and, at the end of the day, can affect your wallet as well with regard to property liability issues.

How can you mitigate dust as it exists around you, or as a challenge to an ongoing project?

    Some might tell you to:

    • Water the area
    • Use dust retardant products
    • Spread gravel, hay, mulch, or grass to act as a barrier
    • Restrict movement in affected area

Those are a few, but you get the point.

The best option would be to employ the services of Global Environmental Solutions. We’ll consult your unique challenge and position you with one of our award winning DirtGlue® solutions to combat the issue and, for all intents and purposes, remediate the problem long-term.

Some of the products that we have in our arsenal include:

DirtGlue® is a liquid concentrate that, when diluted with water and applied to the soil surface, bonds the individual soil particles together and dries to form a “crust” that strengthens the surface of the soil enabling it to prevent dust, sediment, and erosion for extended periods of time.

DustLess® is an organic fluid typically used in high-traffic areas as a solution for extreme dust. It is an environmentally safe dust suppressant that eliminates the need to water, and does not dry out. Clear and odorless, DustLess® is highly refined, and proven to be non-toxic to humans, animals, marine life and plants.

DirtGlue® industrial product was formulated for the purpose of creating a hard stabilized surface for paths, parking lots, tertiary gravel roads, etc. DirtGlue® industrial polymer emulsion is a powerful, high-tech bonding agent specifically engineered to bond soil particles together for road building.

ArenaKleen® works very well with all types of riding arena footing such as sand, stone dust, finely processed screened gravel, and all of the various blends that include the previous as well as many of the fiber products such as rubber, leather, wood, and blends. Because ArenaKleen never dries up, never evaporates, never hardens, and does not wash away with rain, it is ideal in outdoor riding rings as well. Even dusty parking areas can benefit from treatment.

DGCool™ polymer emulsion is a powerful, one-of-a-kind, high-tech bonding agent specifically engineered to bond soil particles together and stand up to cold temperatures. DGCool™ penetrates the surface, binding with the soil to form a tough but flexible layer of protection. Applications can be made at temperatures down to 32°F / 0°C. Combining superior film strength and adhesive properties, DGCool™ is the ideal solution for stockpile capping, stabilizing slopes and embankments in colder environments.

At the end of it all, it’s about controlling the dust that could potentially ail you.
